The Zamrock legend WITCH comes to Gretchen with Zambian psychedelic funk-rock. WITCH, short for We Intend To Cause Havoc, were Zambia's biggest rock band in the 1970s, pioneering a new genre: Zamrock. They merged influences from the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, and James Brown with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs, later incorporating disco and boogie. The band's name was apt, as their energetic performances often required police intervention to manage enthusiastic crowds. Economic recession, totalitarian politics, and HIV brought the Zamrock era to an abrupt end. Jagari, the lead singer and sole surviving original member, collaborated with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç, leading to a successful European tour in 2017 and subsequent performances at Gretchen. Discounted tickets are available for those with limited financial means, but these quotas are limited and offered on a trust basis.
